| looking for a large parking lot in North Central for fundraiser |
[20 Mar 2010|09:51pm] |
My friend is walking in the Race For the Cure this year, and we plan to have a large used women's clothing sale as a fundraiser, ideally on May 15. We could do this from one of our houses, but it could be a much bigger event, and generate that much more awareness, if it took place in a commercial area with a large parking lot (that usually was not fully utilized), with good road frontage, in a place in North Central that was accessible to the bus and/or train. I've already thought of 5555 N Lamar, Northcross Mall and the Alamo and have contacted their property management companies, but if anyone knows of another good place, I'd appreciate hearing about it.
I'm already taking donations of clean women's clothing, but I'd rather have a site nailed down before I advertise it properly. If you have clothes you wish to donate, let me know that, too. :) Much love if they were on hangers, but clean is good!

I've been looking into adopting a cat and I saw that the spca had reduced fees. Now that I have talked my husband into it I can't find the website I was at. Anyone here know of the shelter that was $40 to adopt cats?

I am in recent possession of an iPhone 2G, and since I dropped and broke my last phone I am now terrified of doing the same with this one. Everywhere I've gone today that is big-box only carries cases/covers for 3G or 3Gs. Sigh. Anyone have any recommendations for a locally owned place? Today I tried Target, Wal-Mart, and Wireless Toyz.

| Hosting a Party? |
[19 Mar 2010|01:23pm] |
So I'm hosting a graduation party in May and looking at different venues here in Austin.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
-I don't mind outside/park etc preferably closer to the Hyde Park area -Cheaper better. Preferably under a 100 but I'm willing to look between 100 - 200 hundred. (This cuts out places like the women's federation however). -Parks are fine, if anyone has suggestions for a nice covered pavillion or something. -Needs to accomedate between 30-60 people at least. -Someplace that's "evening" friendly- so no parks like -say- Waterloo downtown where it can get fairly shady come night fall.
If anyone has had these kind of shingdings etc and has suggestions that'd be great.
Thanks!

| Best Shop for Bike Modifications/Maintenance |
[18 Mar 2010|04:44pm] |
I bought a new (used) bike off of our local craigslist recently and need to get a tuneup and some additional work (new handlebars and possibly a rack installed)...
For those of you with comparison experience between the different bike shops in town, which of the lot is the most affordable place to get this kind of work done?
Are there any shops that I should absolutely avoid?
I'm looking to be as cost efficient possible and as the bike is in good condition the upgrades I want done should be fairly straightforward.

| Take over my lease / Myo Massage rec! |
[17 Mar 2010|06:22pm] |
|
Hey guys -- I'm moving away in May (super frown face, naturally) and need someone to take over my lease. I live in the Triangle and my apartment is awesome. Good for temp housing needs or the commitment-phobic. Here's the CL listing.
BUT because I don't merely want to self (or apartment) promote, I thought I would recommend Myo Massage to my fellow Austin Community members. I went there today to get a rubdown while I work on my master's thesis, and it was awesome. They let me pick music (Air! Willie Nelson! Sigur Ros!) and it was very, very affordable for the quality of the experience: $65/hour for Swedish, and my masseuse did a great job rubbing the academic tension out of my neck and shoulders.

| One time horseback riding lesson |

My boyfriend and I are discussing taking a horseback riding lesson, just for fun. Anyone have any ideas where one could/should do this, and how much we can expect to spend?
Thanks!

| Spring Outings |
[17 Mar 2010|03:03pm] |
Hey guys!
I'm wondering if you could suggest any activities that I can do with boy/friend(s) that take advantage of the gorgeous weather we're having!
Nothing that's too rough to walk around on though (uneven terrain, etc.) as my boyfriend has to use a cane.
Thanks!

| Stupid stupid question |
[17 Mar 2010|02:11pm] |
Are there any places downtown that aren't super crazy for St. Patrick's Day? I know I should stay away from the pubs, and that downtown is an epic cluster fuck in general right now...but is it possible that there are places downtown that are crowded but not so crowded that you can't move?
First time going, so...be gentle. (Who am I kidding?)
Update: We went on an adventure yesterday! Took the bus to Barfly's first but it was a little too desolate. Including the boy and I, there were about 10 people there. Strong drinks, but not really a fun atmosphere so we decided to try Crown and Anchor...
Did I mention I don't drink beer, only liquor? My bad, because I didn't. Oops. Well, we hung around there for a while deciding what to do, and the boyfriend talked me into going downtown. We walked on 6th street just to check it out, and then decided to walk on fifth to see what was up.
We ended up at One 2 One. A little older crowd, but good music, not too crowded, no cover. It was great! And I was surprised we ended up at a place where we could sit down. We stayed for a while and walked around a little more, and that was that. Call us lame, but we had a good time. Thanks for the suggestions and hey, apparently it was possible to find a place that wasn't terribly busy. ;)

This morning I pulled an act of genius and locked my keys in my car. With no backups in reach and scant time to get myself to work, I had no alternative but to call a locksmith. Run Local Locksmith came up first in the Google listings, which advertised a flat $29 rate and 15 minute service time. Seemed good enough, so I called.
The response time was closer to thirty minutes, but given that it was 6:30 in the morning, I wasn't going to split hairs about it. But when the (very courteous) man popped open my car, he handed me a bill for $105. The operator had mentioned that cars involved 'a small extra fee', but quadrupling the promised price is more than a little extra.
Maybe this is standard practice for locksmiths; maybe it's always four times as much to break into a car - I don't know. But it's something to keep in mind if anybody here gets locked out. I feel like Run Local could have been a little more upfront about what it was going to cost.
You get virtual kisses if you got my subject line.

[16 Mar 2010|09:55pm] |
Hi, all,
I am making a wedding cake for a friend and need a few organic roses. Does anyone know where such a thing can be found in Austin? Farmer's markets, Whole Foods...?
Thank you so much!

| ISO Upholstery Schools |
[16 Mar 2010|03:00pm] |
Trying to get my loveseat reupholstered and I got quotes ranging from 450-850!! ahh, that was more than I bought the loveseat for! My friend recommended I check out upholstery schools in Austin, it may take 3 months but at least it'll be cheaper! Anyone know of places in Austin who do this? I can only find places that teach upholstery, not sure if they'll take my loveseat as part of their class. Any suggestions/tips/ideas?
Also, in other news, if you know anyone who needs a temp sublet April 1-20th, I just posted this on clist http://austin.craigslist.org/sub/1647175625.html
